Bountiful High School's HOSA club is inviting the public to donate blood Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the school's new Career and Technical Education building.

The drive runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments can be scheduled through the ARUP Blood Services website by searching for the Bountiful High drive on the donor portal, according to the school's website. Walk-in availability has not been announced.

HOSA, short for Health Occupations Students of America and now formally HOSA–Future Health Professionals, is a national student organization focused on health-science careers. The Bountiful High chapter organized the drive in partnership with ARUP Blood Services, which supplies blood to hospitals across Utah. According to ARUP, 100 percent of blood collected stays in the state.

The drive lands as Bountiful works toward a citywide goal. Mayor Kate Bradshaw told the city council on Aug. 25 that residents had donated 128 pints of blood toward a target of 250 pints as part of the America250 celebration. She said more drives were planned through the fall.

Student-run blood drives are a growing piece of the supply chain. Approximately 17 percent of blood drives nationally take place at high schools or colleges, according to HOSA's partnership guidelines with America's Blood Centers. Woods Cross High School's HOSA club hosted its own drive on July 14.

The Oct. 7 drive will be held in the CTE building that opened Aug. 19. The three-story, 39,552-square-foot facility sits just south of the main school and houses health-science classrooms. It was funded by taxpayer-approved bonds and serves students from Bountiful High and other Davis School District schools. CTE Director Brian Hunt said at the building's ribbon-cutting in August that he thought it was "pretty cool to think that someone who's going to be a doctor or a nurse is going to take their first medical anatomy or physiology class right here in this building," as reported by the Davis Journal.

Donors ages 16 to 18 can give blood once every 180 days, according to ARUP Blood Services.
