Davis School District families have 15 days before the first bell rings Thursday, Aug. 20, and the week of Aug. 5–9 is loaded with free community events to help them get ready.

The biggest single day is Thursday, Aug. 6, when three cities host simultaneous evening gatherings.

North Salt Lake: Back-to-school celebration and Night Out Against Crime, Thursday, Aug. 6

North Salt Lake is running two overlapping events at Legacy Park (1140 W. 1100 N.). The "NSL Nights Out: Back to School" celebration runs 5–8 p.m. with food trucks, local vendors and music. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the Night Out Against Crime and Health Fair, co-hosted by the NSL Police Department and the city's Health and Wellness Committee, adds emergency and city vehicles on display, health resources and a chance to meet local first responders. Both are free, according to the city's event calendar.

Woods Cross: Community night, Thursday, Aug. 6

Woods Cross hosts a community night from 5:30–8 p.m. at Hogan Park, 1555 S. 800 West, according to the Davis Journal calendar.

Bountiful: Summerfest Eve, Thursday, Aug. 6

The Bountiful Davis Art Center kicks off its Summerfest weekend with a Navajo Drum Circle and Dance at Bountiful Town Square (75 E. 200 S.) at 7 p.m. as part of the national America 250 commemoration. The weekly Bountiful Farmers Market also runs 4–8 p.m. at Town Square. SNAP/EBT accepted.

BDAC Summerfest, Friday, Aug. 7 and Saturday, Aug. 8

The Art Center's flagship cultural arts festival takes over Bountiful City Park (400 N. 200 W.) from noon to 8 p.m. both days. This year's theme is "E Pluribus Unum — Out of Many, One." Friday's stage runs from Honey Duval & Native Youth at noon through Kargi at 7 p.m., with Tauatage, Danz y Color and Hakan in between. Saturday features Mariachi Fuego at noon, Taiko, Ballet Folklorico at 7 p.m. and six other acts. Artist Sara Serratos leads hands-on Art Yard workshops both days, including linocut printmaking Friday and cyanotype Saturday. Food Truck League vendors will be on site. Admission is free, as we reported Aug. 4.

Farmington, Friday, Aug. 7

Farmington Heritage Park hosts a community event from 5–9 p.m., with a separate event at Fountain Square at Station Park at 7:30 p.m.

Looking ahead: back-to-school prep

The Davis Education Foundation hosts a Pantry Pack Grab-and-Go Stocking Event on Monday, Aug. 17, from 5:30–8 p.m., where volunteers will fill 1,000 food packs for students experiencing homelessness. Sign up at wildsageutah.com. United Way of Salt Lake/Davis wrapped its Stuff the Bus drive Aug. 2 with a goal of delivering 1,260 stuffed backpacks to Davis School District schools.
