Jennie Earl, the incumbent on the Utah State Board of Education (USBE), is running to keep her District 1 seat in the Nov. 3 general election.
Earl faces Democrat Cathy Callow-Heusser in the race. District 1 covers parts of Cache, Rich, Box Elder, Summit and Morgan counties, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Earl holds a master's degree in education from Weber State University. Her career has included teaching special education and middle school math, according to the Tribune.
In a candidate survey published Oct. 29 by the Standard-Examiner, Earl laid out four priorities: advancing education policy, supporting educators, protecting student data and responsible technology use, and advocating for parents' interests.
"I have been working to build a culture of academic excellence," Earl wrote in the survey.
Earl said she connects constituents with state or local contacts when they raise concerns. She also said she helps constituents understand Utah code and local policies so they can address issues on their own.
On compromise, Earl said she worked with lawmakers and community groups to balance competing interests while protecting instructional materials used in school prevention programs. She did not name the specific program or legislation.
Callow-Heusser has worked as a teacher, university instructor, education consultant and USBE staff member, according to her campaign materials cited by the Tribune. Her specific platform positions were not available in the sources reviewed for this article.
The Tribune reported that Earl did not respond to its own candidate survey, noting she was out of the country and unable to meet the deadline.
Mail ballots must be dropped off at a ballot dropbox by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, or received by the county clerk by 8 p.m. that day if returned by mail.
