Woods Cross High School's girls tennis team won the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) 5A state championship Saturday, Oct. 3, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

The Wildcats finished with 56 points, pulling away from Hillcrest (44) and Skyline (43) in the team standings. Timpview placed fourth with 28 points. Bountiful, the other area school in the field, finished fifth with 15.

The title is the Wildcats' third in a row, according to the Deseret News.

Sophomore Lyla Bergeson won the No. 1 singles championship for the second straight year, beating Hillcrest's Luciana Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3 in the final. Bergeson entered the tournament as the top seed and did not drop a set through her first four matches, the Deseret News reported.

Bergeson is the younger sister of Sage Bergeson, who helped the Wildcats win the 2024 title and now plays at BYU. Their brother Drew, a junior, plays on the Woods Cross boys team.

The Wildcats scored across all five positions. Lila Johnson entered the state tournament seeded No. 1 in second singles, and Ruby Smart was seeded No. 3 in third singles, according to bracket information published by the Deseret News. In doubles, Liza Eyring and Lillie Bennion held the top seed in first doubles, while Libby Derrick and Ellen Pugsley were seeded third in second doubles.

"This team worked hard all season. They were so strong and committed," head coach Jim Romera told the Deseret News after the match.

For Bountiful, Eve Willis and Emery Barnett entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in second doubles. Lola Sulser (first singles), Layla Stevenson (second singles) and the first doubles pair of Kate Wolfgramm and Violet Madsen were each seeded sixth.

Woods Cross High posted a congratulatory message Wednesday, Oct. 7, congratulating the team on the championship and the way the players represented the school.
