Farmington's Lagoon will add its 11th roller coaster in summer 2027 after unveiling J3 Grand Prix, a Formula One-inspired ride that is the first of its kind in the country.
The park revealed the coaster Saturday, Oct. 3, at a public event, first reported by ABC4 Utah. J3 Grand Prix is an Intamin Hot Racer, a single-rail launched coaster model that has been built in Australia, France and Russia but never in the United States.
Julie Freed, Lagoon's director of special events, said the ride's name nods to the coaster it replaces. "Everybody loved Jetstar 2, as do we, our Schwarzkopf coaster. So we wanted to keep that in mind with the name of this new ride," Freed told ABC4.
Jet Star 2, a steel coaster designed by Anton Schwarzkopf, debuted at the World's Fair Expo '74 in Spokane, Washington, before operating at Lagoon from April 1976 until it closed permanently in November 2025, according to a Farmington city newsletter. The ride was then deconstructed.
J3 Grand Prix will occupy that same compact plot. According to Theme Park Tribune, the coaster's narrow single-rail track allows tighter turns and a more compact layout than traditional designs.
Until now, single-rail coasters in the U.S. have been limited to Raptor models built by Rocky Mountain Construction. The Intamin Hot Racer is a new entry in the American market.
The ride specs lean toward intensity over size. J3 Grand Prix will top out at 50 feet and 40 miles per hour across 1,746 feet of track. Lagoon said riders will experience 13 airtime moments, up to eight seconds of total airtime and three inversions during a 102-second ride cycle.
Two 10-seat trains will run on a dual-launch system. Freed described the mechanics as two forward launches that build speed without reversing, a first for the park. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall.
The coaster will also be the first Intamin coaster at Lagoon. Liechtenstein-based Intamin manufactures coasters worldwide, including VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando.
Lagoon has added five new rides over the past three years: Primordial in 2023; Steamworx, Time Tinker and Rivets & Rotors in 2025; and Nutcracker in March 2026. J3 Grand Prix is the park's first new coaster since Primordial.
Lagoon is scheduled to open J3 Grand Prix in July 2027.
