What was at stake
Utah's 2nd Congressional District spans much of the northern part of the state, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Moore ran in the newly drawn 2nd District after a court fight over Utah's congressional maps resulted in new district lines. He had represented the state's 1st Congressional District since 2021.
Moore serves as vice chair of the House Republican Conference, making him Utah's only member of congressional leadership, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Nationally, NBC News projected Democrats won control of the House of Representatives on election night.
The key issues: Moore, an Ogden native, has served on the House Ways and Means Committee and advocated for Hill Air Force Base, according to his congressional biography. Crosby, a former Utah State University instructor who has lived in Northern Utah for 19 years, campaigned on opposing tariffs and expanding health care access, according to his campaign website. Both candidates identified Hill Air Force Base as a priority for the district.
A little history
Moore was first elected to Congress in 2020, winning the old 1st District with 69.5% of the vote, according to Wikipedia. He won re-election in 2022 with 63% and again in 2024. After mid-cycle redistricting, Moore ran in the new 2nd District and won the Republican primary with 56.7% of the vote.
A Utah Debate Commission poll ahead of an October debate found Moore leading Crosby by five points, 39% to 34%, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Republicans held a 33.5-point registration advantage in the new 2nd District.
What's next
The results remain unofficial until the canvass is complete. County officials must finish their canvass by Nov. 17, according to Democracy Sentry. The state board of canvassers convenes Nov. 23 to canvass federal results, and the lieutenant governor issues certificates.
Under Utah law, a losing candidate may request a recount if the vote margin is 0.25% of the total vote or less, according to Verified Voting. Members of the 120th Congress are sworn in Jan. 3, 2027.
