Kendalyn Harris, a Republican and former Bountiful mayor, leads the Davis County Commission Seat A race with 52,193 votes, according to unofficial results from Davis County Clerk, Elections. Harris is the only candidate listed in the race. The count is not complete.
Harris is running for the seat being vacated by Commission Chair Bob Stevenson, according to the Standard Examiner.
What was at stake
Davis County is governed by a three-member elected Board of Commissioners who serve four-year, overlapping terms, according to the county commission's website. The commission levies taxes, adopts ordinances and sets policy for more than 300,000 residents.
The key issues:
- Property taxes: Harris highlighted a 14.9% property tax increase approved by the commission, saying she would favor smaller, incremental increases when necessary rather than a large increase, according to the Standard Examiner.
- Jail overtime spending: Harris said the Davis County jail spending a million dollars a year on overtime is "a critical piece" that needs review, according to the Standard Examiner.
- South Davis representation: Harris said the commission had not been represented by someone from the south end of the county in over eight years, according to the Standard Examiner.
A little history
Harris served eight years on the Bountiful City Council and four years as mayor, according to her campaign website. She said she had been endorsed by four former Davis County commissioners, according to the Standard Examiner.
Stevenson, who held Seat A, is running for the state House District 16 seat following the resignation of Rep. Trevor Lee on Sept. 28, according to the Davis Journal.
What's next
The results remain unofficial until the canvass is complete. The Davis County Clerk's office said results become official after the canvass on Nov. 17.
