Dale Schultz carved a relief sculpture of Saint Olaf that hangs in the church bearing the saint's name on South Orchard Drive in Bountiful. He organized pickleball games there. He dug out his daughter's basement bathroom and renovated it after she bought a house.

He was 66.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, Schultz was shot and killed at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho. He and his wife, Reinette, were in town for a family reunion when a gunman opened fire at approximately 2:29 p.m., according to Idaho News. Three people died and seven were injured. The suspect, 24-year-old Chad Williams, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an off-duty Idaho state trooper and an armed civilian returned fire.

Reinette Schultz was shot and underwent surgery after flying back to Utah on Monday, Aug. 3. As of Tuesday, Aug. 4, she was recovering, according to ABC4 Utah.

St. Olaf's Catholic Church, 1793 S. Orchard Drive, held a Rosary for the Schultz family on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Community members gathered to pray for Reinette and the couple's three children and two grandchildren.

Deacon Scott Dodge, communications director for the Salt Lake City Catholic Diocese and a deacon at St. Olaf's, said he has known the Schultz family for about 25 years. He worked with Dale when Schultz converted to Catholicism, and their children attended school together.

"Dale was really an extraordinary husband, and father, and grandfather," Dodge told ABC4 on Tuesday, Aug. 4. "He was really a rock-solid kind of guy."

Dodge said Schultz was good at everything he did and made it look effortless. Beyond the relief sculpture and the pickleball games, Schultz was known for his patience mentoring young people at the parish. The Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City also confirmed Schultz was a member of their Choir School family, though his specific role was not detailed.

Dodge visited Reinette on Monday night when she returned to Utah. He described her as a strong person with significant family support and called the Schultz family "cherished members of St. Olaf."

The loss has rippled through the parish. Dodge described the grief as arriving in waves, saying the reality of the tragedy is "almost crushing" and that it hit him hardest when he saw how the consequences extend far beyond the death itself.
