Three seats on the Woods Cross High School Community Council are open, and parents have until 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, to apply.

Principal Jo Richins posted the call for volunteers Monday, Aug. 24, asking parents and guardians to help shape academic plans at the smallest comprehensive high school in Davis County.

The council controls how the school spends its annual dividend from Utah's School LAND Trust program, a statewide fund that distributes revenue from state trust lands to individual schools for academic priorities. Members also review academic improvement plans that go to the Davis School District board for final approval and advise school and district administrators.

"Serving on our School Community Council is a wonderful way for parents and teachers to contribute and help improve academic performance at our school," Richins wrote in the announcement.

Each seat carries a two-year term. To qualify, a parent must have a student enrolled at Woods Cross High for at least one of those two years and must pass a background check.

The council meets the first Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. If more candidates apply than seats available, an election will run through the Davis School District system from Aug. 31 through 3 p.m. Sept. 7.

About the council

Woods Cross High, at 600 W. 2200 S., is Davis County's smallest comprehensive high school. Utah law has required every public school to maintain a community council since 2000. Councils consist of the principal, school employees elected by staff and parents elected by other parents.
