Drivers heading south through Davis County this weekend will need to find another route. UDOT will fully close four miles of southbound I-15 between 200 North in Kaysville and Park Lane in Farmington starting Saturday, Aug. 8, at 10 p.m., with traffic expected to resume by Sunday, Aug. 9, at 8:30 a.m., according to a UDOT press release.

Northbound I-15 will also be squeezed to a single lane during the same window as crews remove overhead signs, ABC4 reported.

The overnight shutdown is part of the $151 million Shepard Lane Improved project, which is building a new diamond interchange at Shepard Lane (now called North Station Lane) in Farmington. The stretch of I-15 through Farmington carries roughly 163,000 vehicles per day, making it one of northern Utah's busiest freeway segments.

Why overnight closures keep happening

The project corridor is unusually tight. I-15, US-89, Legacy Parkway, Union Pacific Railroad tracks and UTA rail lines all converge in the same strip, forcing crews to maneuver large bridge components into place during off-peak hours.

"Due to the nature of the bridge work we've been doing, we've had several full closures of I-15, along with a handful of partial closures," Mitch Shaw, UDOT Region 1 senior communications manager, told Rocky Mountain Construction. "We've been able to conduct this work overnight to limit impacts during peak commute times."

What the project delivers

The new interchange fully opened June 29 with four lanes in each direction, a 10-foot multi-use path on the north side, six-foot sidewalks on the south side and four-foot bike lanes. It replaces an old two-lane overpass that offered no freeway access.

Beyond the interchange itself, the project includes a new pedestrian bridge over I-15 at Park Lane connecting FrontRunner facilities to Park Lane east of US-89, new northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes between Shepard Lane and Park Lane, a noise wall on the east side of I-15 and a direct connection from 1500 West to the interchange.

Farmington City Council approved a $200,759 betterment agreement with UDOT in February 2024 to fund aesthetic improvements at the interchange site, including fencing, lighting and signage.

As of June 26, the project was 75% complete. UDOT expects work to wrap up by the end of 2026. Wadsworth Brothers Construction of Draper is the general contractor.
