A 36-year-old parolee is in the Davis County Jail without bail after police say he shot a man twice in the abdomen at a North Salt Lake trailer park on Friday, Aug. 21, then evaded capture for five days.

Ammon Michael Etherington faces four charges: attempted murder and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, both first-degree felonies. He also faces aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, both second-degree felonies, according to ABC4 Utah, which first reported the arrest.

All charges are allegations. Etherington is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What police say happened

North Salt Lake police responded to the trailer park on the morning of Aug. 21 after reports of a shooting, the arrest statement says. Officers found the victim with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. He told police a man driving a red GMC Jimmy had shot him after a confrontation.

The day before, Etherington had driven the victim's ex-girlfriend to the trailer park so she could visit the children she shares with the victim. She spent the night so she could be there for her child's first day of school.

On the morning of Aug. 21, Etherington was parked outside the victim's residence, according to the arrest statement. The victim confronted him. Etherington said he had property to return and handed over a bag and a pair of shoes. The victim told Etherington to leave because "he was not welcome near his home."

Etherington drove away but turned back into the parking lot moments later. The victim had stepped outside to leave for work when he saw Etherington's vehicle returning. When the victim moved to confront him, Etherington allegedly pulled a semi-automatic .22-caliber handgun and opened fire, the arrest statement says.

The ex-girlfriend told police she had asked Etherington for a ride to the victim's residence and told him not to stay in the area because it would "cause problems" if the victim saw him.

Five-day manhunt

Flock cameras and surveillance footage captured Etherington's GMC Jimmy, which had an Idaho license plate, near the trailer park. Officers later found the vehicle unoccupied along North Temple in Salt Lake City.

The North Davis Metro SWAT Team drafted and executed a warrant at a nearby apartment, but Etherington no longer lived there. Salt Lake City Police located surveillance footage showing him walking from his vehicle to a TRAX platform.

When the GMC was towed and searched, officers found a firearm holster and one unspent .22-caliber round on the floorboard. They also found 104 unspent rounds in the center console.

Arrest on Wednesday

The Unified Police Department received reports of Etherington loitering in the early hours of Wednesday, Aug. 26. He allegedly fled on foot when officers approached. An officer pursued him and used a taser to detain him.

Etherington was taken to a hospital for medical clearance, then booked into the Davis County Jail without bail.

The arrest statement describes Etherington as having a lengthy record of violent offenses, including aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and robbery. He was on parole at the time of the shooting.

The victim's current medical condition has not been publicly reported. No court date for Etherington has been announced.
