Davis School District students head back to class Thursday, Aug. 20, and that gives South Davis County families five days to squeeze in the last of summer's free community programming.

Here's what's still on the calendar in Bountiful before backpacks come out.

Gardening workshop — Saturday, Aug. 15

The Bountiful Community Garden at 50 W. 2100 S. hosts a gardening workshop at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, as part of the city's America250 "Red, White, and Move!" challenge. The garden, managed by Gardens Growing Good, is in its inaugural year and sits in a cul-de-sac east of the large field across from Bountiful Cemetery.

Farmers market — every Thursday through October

The Bountiful Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bountiful Town Square, 75 E. 200 S., through Oct. 15. Vendors sell fresh produce, baked goods, food-truck fare and handmade products. SNAP/EBT is accepted.

The Davis Journal promoted the market in its Aug. 13 newsletter, encouraging residents to support local growers and artists. The Aug. 21 market falls on the first day of school, giving families one more Thursday evening outing before routines shift.

Veterans Park evenings — Wednesday, Aug. 19

Bountiful Veterans Park, 750 S. 100 East, opens its "Stories of Service" series every Wednesday from 6 p.m. until dusk. Visitors walk the park and learn how local veterans served the nation. The series runs through Wednesday, Sept. 30, well into the school year.

Final free concert — Friday, Aug. 21

Friday, Aug. 21, is the last show in Bountiful's free Summer Concert Series at Bountiful City Park, 400 N. 200 W. Music starts at 7 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. The city has not announced the performer for the final night; check bountifulutah.gov for the lineup.

America250 hikes and rides wrap up after school starts

No guided hike or ride falls in the Aug. 15–20 window, but two outings remain on the America250 calendar. A guided hike from Holbrook Canyon to the Great Western Trail runs Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A mountain bike ride from North Canyon to Rudy's Flat follows Monday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 10 a.m.

Mayor Kate Bradshaw chairs the America250 Bountiful executive committee, which organized the summer-long series with five volunteer sub-committees. Participants who log 250 points in the challenge become eligible for annual and day passes to the South Davis Recreation Center.

Looking ahead

The America250 calendar extends into fall. The Freedom's Light Festival is set for Sept. 17–19 at Bountiful City Park, and the Veterans Park Wednesday evenings continue through Sept. 30.

Aug. 20 is an early-out day for elementary students, according to ABC4, so families may still have time for one last afternoon at the farmers market that Thursday evening.
