Stephanie Wayment, a Democrat, is running for Davis County Controller in the Nov. 3 general election. She faces Republican Scott Parke. Davis County Clerk Brian McKenzie certified Wayment as the Democratic candidate on Aug. 31.

Wayment, who said she graduated from Viewmont High School in Davis County, said she decided to run after observing what she described as deficiencies in how the county controller managed funds during Truth in Taxation meetings, according to her campaign website.

On the issues

Fiscal accountability and government transparency

Wayment said she wants to "build a fiscally sound government that finally breaks the cycle of repeated mistakes; a government rooted in integrity, transparency, courage, and responsibility." She cited concerns about how county funds were being managed as a key motivation for her candidacy.

Role of county controller and partisan independence

Wayment argued the county controller should not belong to the same party as the county commissioners in order to provide adequate checks and balances on county budgets. She said the position should be earned through knowledge and experience rather than political ideology, and that the controller should not answer to the same party leadership as the commissioners, according to her campaign website.

The League of Women Voters of Davis County held a moderated candidate forum for the Davis County Controller race on Oct. 8 via Zoom, featuring both Wayment and Parke.

Candidate responses are drawn from Wayment's campaign website and the League of Women Voters of Davis County questionnaire. Policy positions reflect the candidate's own statements and have not been independently verified.
