Farmington residents living between Interstate 15 and Main Street now face Stage 2 fire restrictions after the city moved its boundary westward on Wednesday, July 22.

The change, posted to the city's website Wednesday, shifts the restricted area from everything east of I-15 to everything east of Main Street. That pulls in a strip of the city between Main Street and the interstate that was previously unrestricted under Farmington's own Stage 2 order, which has been in effect since Monday, July 6.

Under Stage 2 rules, the following are banned in the restricted zone: campfires, recreational fires, fire pits, portable outdoor fireplaces, wood-burning fires, charcoal grills, pellet grills, smokers using solid fuel, any open fire, and off-highway vehicles without a working spark arrestor. Propane and natural gas grills with a working shutoff valve are still allowed if used in a cleared area away from dry vegetation. Smoking is permitted only inside an enclosed vehicle or building.

The city did not explain why the boundary was moved.

Fireworks and fire restrictions: two rules, one area

Farmington also clarified that its fireworks restriction and Stage 2 fire restriction are separate rules that happen to cover the same geography. Both now apply east of Main Street.

The fireworks restriction, posted Tuesday, July 21, allows legal fireworks from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, through Sunday, July 26, for residents outside the restricted zone. Hours extend to midnight on Friday, July 24, for Pioneer Day. Citations will be issued for violations.

The city urged residents to verify their exact location before lighting fireworks or conducting any activity regulated under Stage 2 restrictions, noting that Davis County also prohibits fireworks in several unincorporated areas within and around Farmington. Those county-regulated areas fall under a separate Davis County order covering all unincorporated state and private lands in the county, with violations punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Farmington's Stage 2 restrictions remain in effect until further notice. The city has not announced an expiration date or conditions for lifting the order.
