Holy Cross Hospital in Layton invites Davis County residents to a free 50-day wellness challenge starting Saturday, Sept. 19.

The challenge marks the hospital's 50th anniversary and is open to anyone in the county, including residents of Bountiful, Woods Cross, North Salt Lake and Farmington. Participants commit to at least one healthy activity per day for 50 days. Qualifying activities include hitting 10,000 steps, eating extra servings of fruits and vegetables, drinking eight glasses of water and practicing mindful breathing exercises, the Davis Journal reported.

"For 50 days, we're inviting everyone in our community to join us in making daily choices that improve their health," Kyle Brostrom, the hospital's chief executive, said. "This is about finding joy in simple ways – movement, nourishing your body, and calming your mind, one healthy step at a time."

Brostrom, a Davis County native who returned to lead the 220-bed hospital, said the challenge is meant to help residents experiment with healthy habits and find routines that work for them. He called the hospital a "bedrock of health and healing for Northern Utah" over five decades.

Everyone who signs up gets a free commemorative T-shirt. Commemorative medals go to the top point-earners in each age category. Participants report their points through a weekly email prompt after registering.

The hospital traces its roots to the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who traveled to Utah in 1875 to establish care for injured miners and railroad workers. It opened in 1976 as Davis Hospital and Medical Center and was renamed Holy Cross Hospital after CommonSpirit Health acquired the facility on May 1, 2023.

Registration is open now at mountain.commonspirit.org/Davis50. The challenge begins Saturday, Sept. 19.
