Families across Bountiful, Woods Cross, North Salt Lake, and Farmington still have time before August to squeeze in an adventure close to home. Here are seven outdoor activities you can tackle with the kids before the month ends.

1. Hike to Elephant Rock at Mueller Park

Mueller Park Trail in Bountiful offers a 7-mile out-and-back route to Elephant Rock, a large gray formation with panoramic views of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island. The trail gains about 900 feet over packed dirt and rock. Not up for the full distance? The first city viewpoint is just 1 mile round trip with only 234 feet of gain, according to Utah Hiking Beauty.

Trailhead: End of 1800 South, Bountiful. No permits required. A $10 day-use fee applies only for the picnic-area parking lot; street parking below is free. Dogs allowed on leash.

2. Walk Wild Rose Trail in North Salt Lake

This easy 2.1-mile loop starts at Wild Rose Park, 650 Sky Crest Lane, North Salt Lake. The park has a playground, restrooms, and a pavilion, so younger kids can burn energy before or after the hike. A Sunset Point overlook rewards walkers with views of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island.

Details: Dog-friendly. Shares sections with mountain bikers.

3. Chase the waterfall on Farmington Creek Trail

Farmington Creek Waterfall Trail climbs 889 feet over 3.3 miles round trip through Farmington Canyon, just east of Lagoon. The payoff: a roughly 20-foot waterfall and a "car graveyard" of 1950s vehicles that rolled off the canyon road above. A switchback trail added in late 2022 makes the final descent to the waterfall base more manageable for families, according to Road Trip Ryan trail guide.

Trailhead: From I-15, take Exit 324, head east on SR-225, turn right on Park Lane, right on Main Street, left on 600 N, left on 100 E, stay right at the fork. Parking area is 1.5 miles up on the right. No permits. Dogs allowed. Season runs April through October.

Note: Farmington City has Stage 2 fire restrictions in effect east of I-15 as of July 2026. Check farmington.utah.gov for current conditions before heading out.

4. Bike or stroll the Legacy Parkway Trail

This fully paved, flat, 13-mile trail runs from Farmington Station south to North Salt Lake with no street crossings. Restrooms and drinking fountains are spaced along the route, making it practical for families with small children on bikes or in strollers.

Parking: Foxboro North Regional Park, 1120 W 1100 N, North Salt Lake, or near the UTA FrontRunner Farmington Station at the north end.

Heads up: A detour has been in place since Monday, July 13, between 2425 South and 500 South in Woods Cross and is expected to last through October 2026. Follow posted signage in that section.

5. Paddle and fish at Bountiful Pond

Bountiful Pond (also called Bountiful Lake) sits close to town with mountain views, a one-mile walking path, shoreline fishing, and picnic areas. Discover Davis lists it as one of the best paddle boarding and kayaking spots in the county. Bring your own board or kayak. The walking path and fishing access make it a solid half-day outing even without watercraft.

6. Kayak at Antelope Island State Park

For a bigger-water paddle, Antelope Island State Park offers kayaking and paddle boarding on the Great Salt Lake. The park charges a day-use vehicle fee at the gate. Bridger Bay on the island's west side provides a sheltered launch point. Check stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island for current fees and water conditions before making the drive.

7. Spot wildlife along the Legacy Nature Preserve

The Legacy Nature Preserve, accessible only from the Legacy Parkway Trail, covers 2,100 acres of wetlands set aside for wildlife. Bring binoculars. The flat, paved trail makes this one stroller-friendly.

Before you go: Farmington City's Stage 2 fire restrictions east of I-15 prohibit open flames in the foothills. For trail updates in Bountiful, contact Bountiful City Trails at 801-298-6190, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
