Davis County residents have until Nov. 30 to help shape the next 30 years of public transit along the Wasatch Front.
The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) launched the first round of public engagement for UTA Moves 2055, an update to its Strategic Long-Range Transit Plan, according to a UTA press release issued Oct. 19. An online open house is set for Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. via Zoom. The comment window opened Oct. 15.
The plan matters locally. Riders in Bountiful, Woods Cross, North Salt Lake and Farmington depend on UTA bus routes and the FrontRunner commuter rail line. UTA is already advancing the FrontRunner 2X double-tracking project, which moved into the Engineering phase of the federal Capital Investment Grants program with nearly $1.3 billion in federal funding at stake, as first reported by the Davis Journal. That project would double FrontRunner service and cut travel times by 17% compared with I-15, according to UTA.
UTA Moves 2055 builds on UTA Moves 2050, adopted in 2024, which set strategies to maintain the existing system, increase service frequency and expand access in growing communities. The updated plan will revisit those priorities on 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-year timeframes, accounting for changes in growth, funding and ridership needs, the agency said.
"As our region grows and community needs change, input from the public and our partners will help us understand what is working, what needs remain and which transit investments can make the greatest difference," Jay Fox, UTA executive director, said in a statement.
New to this planning cycle is a cost-effectiveness study and cost-benefit analysis, according to UTA's long-range transit plan page. The agency will also identify facility needs tied to prioritized projects.
UTA is partnering with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah's Urban Rural Specialized Transit Association (URSTA) on a statewide transit study. Survey responses will be shared among all three agencies to inform decisions across Utah.
The Transit Commission is scheduled to adopt the final plan by fall 2027. A second round of public engagement is planned for spring 2027.
Residents can review and comment on the UTA Moves 2055 transit network map and take the statewide survey at rideuta.com/UTAMoves. The Oct. 20 open house requires Zoom registration.
