Farmington firefighters, police officers and city staff climbed 2,340 steps up a roller coaster tower on Friday, Sept. 11, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The group scaled the 208-foot Cannibal tower at Lagoon five times, totaling 110 flights of stairs. That number matches the 110 flights inside the original World Trade Center, the same stairwells first responders ascended during rescue efforts before the towers collapsed.

The second annual 9/11 Commemorative Tower Climb drew members of the Farmington Fire Department, Police Department, Parks and Recreation, city administration and City Council, along with personnel from neighboring departments, ABC4 reported. Fire Chief Shelby Willis leads the Farmington Fire Department, which helped organize the event alongside Lagoon.

The tower stands 208 feet tall.

Cannibal, a steel roller coaster that opened in 2015, features an enclosed elevator lift inside that tower. The height and built-in stairwell made it a fit for a memorial stair climb, a format fire departments across the country use each September to honor the 343 firefighters killed at the World Trade Center.

Lagoon hosted the climb and thanked participants in an Instagram post that drew more than 13,000 likes by Saturday, Sept. 12. Farmington City posted video of the morning climb, calling it a tribute to the responders who gave their lives 25 years ago and thanking Lagoon for opening the tower.

The inaugural tower climb took place in 2025, according to the Farmington Fire Department's annual report, which listed the Lagoon event among the department's community outreach efforts that year. No details about the 2025 climb, including participant count, were published.

The tower climb was one of two Farmington tributes on Sept. 11. A separate Patriots Day ceremony, conducted by American Legion Post 27 and the Farmington Fire Department, was held at 8 a.m. at the fire station, 82 N. 100 E., according to the city's September newsletter.
